Plain-language summary
A short overview to help you read the document below. The full document is what applies.
- We tell you what we collect and why, and we collect only what the service needs.
- Consent is meaningful and separate: marketing consent is never bundled into the Terms.
- You can withdraw consent, ask for access or correction, and complain to us directly.
- A parent or guardian consents on behalf of a child, because a child cannot meaningfully consent.
1. Accountability
FamilyFriendFinder is responsible for the personal information under its control. Privacy questions, access requests and complaints go to our privacy contact below, and are logged and tracked in our internal privacy request system.
2. Identifying purposes
We collect personal information for these purposes only:
- Creating and operating your account
- Matching your family with other families based on the preferences you enter
- Enabling parent-to-parent messaging after both parents accept
- Safety, moderation, reporting and blocking
- Billing your membership
- Security, fraud prevention and legal compliance
- Sending service emails, and marketing emails only if you separately opt in
3. Consent
We ask for consent in plain language at the point it matters, using separate confirmations rather than one combined agreement. Optional uses - a child photograph, faith-based matching, promotional email - each have their own opt-in and are off unless you turn them on.
Because a child aged 2 to 20 cannot be expected to provide meaningful consent, the parent, legal guardian or lawfully authorized adult provides consent for the child's information. The adult can withdraw that consent at any time by deleting the child profile or the account.
You can withdraw consent for marketing at any time from Your Privacy Choices or the unsubscribe link in any marketing email. Under Canada's anti-spam legislation we process unsubscribe requests promptly, and in any event within the period required by law. Withdrawing consent for information that is necessary to operate the service means we can no longer provide the service, and your account can be deleted.
4. Limiting collection
We collect only what is needed for the purposes above. We do not collect a child's full legal name, government identification number, exact home or school address, or medical information. Photographs are optional.
5. Limiting use, disclosure and retention
We do not sell personal information, and we do not sell or license child information. We disclose personal information only:
- To service providers acting on our instructions (see below)
- To another member, limited to the fields your privacy settings allow
- Where required by law, or to address a safety or fraud concern
We keep information while your account is active, and afterwards only as long as needed for legal, security, accounting or dispute purposes. Retention periods are set out in our internal Data Retention and Deletion Policy and are reviewed by counsel.
6. Accuracy
You can edit your profile, your family details and each child profile at any time so the information we hold stays accurate.
7. Safeguards
Access to your records is enforced at the database level, so your data is readable only by your own account. Search results are produced by server-side functions that return only shareable fields. Administrative access to a private conversation requires a legitimate moderation reason and is recorded in an audit log.
8. Where information is processed
Our hosting, database, authentication and email service providers may process information in the United States or other countries. Information processed outside Canada may be accessible to courts and authorities in those countries under their own laws.
9. Openness
This notice, our Privacy Policy and our Cookie Policy describe our practices. Each is versioned and dated, and previous versions are retained.
10. Access and correction
You may ask what personal information we hold about you and your children, how it is used and to whom it has been disclosed, and you may ask us to correct it. Submit a request through the Privacy Request Center. We may need to verify your identity first. Where we cannot provide something, we will explain why.
11. Challenging compliance
If you are not satisfied with how we handled your information or your request, tell us using the privacy contact below and we will investigate and respond. You may also contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, or your provincial privacy regulator where one applies.
12. Provincial privacy laws
Canadian federal privacy law is not necessarily the only law that applies. Provincial privacy legislation may also apply depending on where members live, where we operate and what information is involved. Our pre-launch legal review specifically covers this question.
